The Mounds Park Block Party

July 27, 2024 Nathaniel Barber
Man holding a plate of delicious meatballs, with a meatball on the fork. His shirt reads, "Keep Saint Paul Boring."

The Mounds Park Summer Block Party is a wildly fun event.

The rules are simple: bring a dish to share, and come prepared to hang with your neighbors.

Many of the neighbors who gather for the Block Party are clearly dear old friends. But many others do not and are new to the neighborhood. All are welcome. Both familiar and not are smooshed together in a wildly fun, awkward, relaxing event that is fun for the whole family.

A boy, launches through the air swinging a baseball bat at a piñata.

Fun fact, the food at the Mounds Park Block Party is the fucking shit. There’s a buffet of party wieners, chicken wings, taco salad, deviled eggs, ham and pickle rolls, sweet bars…every year I look forward for the next charcuterie board to drop.

There’s also a piñata. The fire department makes an appearance. There’s live music. Cold kegs of beer and several coolers full of soda.

Whose lawn chair is that? Who cares. Take a seat and rest a little. You can move when they come back from the buffet.

The Mound’s Park Block Party is a big deal. It’s a big part of what makes our weird little neighborhood such an amazing place to live.

Pro tip: bring Pyrex. I’ve yet to be scolded for shamelessly poaching the buffet. And it’s better than walking home with your pockets or purse full of BBQ chicken wings and macaroni salad.

In the background, a woman in a summer sun hat walks by. Close up, in the tree, a boy's legs with crocks on dangling.
